SANTA CLARITA - The College of the Canyons women's basketball team had just played a road game the previous night, but in preparation for its biggest nonconference game of the preseason Friday night, coach Greg Herrick took the unusual step of holding an extra practice earlier in the day.
The extra work apparently paid off as COC upset visiting Ventura College 69-61. Ventura, the defending state champion, was ranked No. 1 in the state. The Cougars were ranked 17th.
