VENTURA - Just days before his trial was scheduled to start, David Alvarez pleaded guilty Friday to first-degree murder in the strangulation of 14-year-old Kali Manley.
Alvarez's surprise plea ended a two-year nightmare that began Dec. 20, 1998, when the Ojai girl failed to come home from a friend's house where she was supposed to be spending the night. Michael Katz, the deputy attorney general who prosecuted the case, said defense attorney James Farley proposed a plea bargain on Feb. 10, and he agreed after conferring with Manley's family.
