THE EASTERN CONFERENCE is a mess.
Never has a sorrier group of NBA teams been lumped together, bound by nothing more than being in the same relative vicinity. Of course, there isn't any doubt the elite teams in the league reside in the Western Conference. But four months into the 2001-02 season we now know the second-best tier of teams also live out West.
So lousy is Eastern Conference basketball that you could make a case teams such as Houston, Denver and, yes, even the Warriors, still would be harboring playoff hopes if they weren't so, shall we say, geographically challenged.
