Joel Connelly's Feb. 11 column raised the question of the usefulness of the recent visit of Seattle's U.S. Rep. Jim McDermott to Bangladesh.
Poverty does not make Bangladesh unique or interesting, nor does its geographic location. But perhaps there is more to this poor nation than meets the eye from a distance.
Bangladesh is the third largest Muslim country in the world and is a functioning democracy. With a secular constitution, Bangladesh provides economic and political opportunities for people from all religions and faiths.
