It has been called everything from the Last Great Race to the I-Killed-A-Dog. It pits man and animal against the elements across 1,150 miles of frozen wasteland and may, but probably doesn't, commemorate a heroic 1925 attempt to deliver diphtheria vaccine to dying children.
More than 100 dogs have died in the 29-year history of the Iditarod Trail International Sled Dog Race, a torturous course from Anchorage to Nome.
