I DREW DEEP private satisfaction from John Howard's success in last month's federal election. Like the poet A.E. Housman, it was not that I set any great store by politics; but I knew the result would annoy the sort of person whom I do not like. Gnash your teeth, Malcolm Fraser! Eat your heart out, Phillip Adams!
The comments made by leaders on the day following the elections seemed to me a little more restrained, a little more dignified than the feral snarls to which we had grown accustomed, not all that many years ago.
