This past September in Florida, Key West city officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to inaugurate one of the most advanced wastewater treatment facilities in the southern United States and Caribbean. The new water treatment plant treats waste to advanced standards, removing harmful nutrients that threaten the surrounding coral reef ecosystem. The plant also features a 3,280 foot deep injection well that will end the discharge of treated sewage into the Atlantic Ocean, although a feasibility study is underway to determine if the highly-treated effluent can be mused.
