It's no surprise that Wisconsin's law banning concealed weapons is under fire. The terrorist attacks of Sept. 11 unnerved many Americans, and some have concluded they would be safer if they could carry a gun. If only living a secure 21st century life were that simple.
Overturning Wisconsin's 130-year-old ban on carrying concealed weapons would enhance the perception of security at one level, but it would harm the reality of personal safety in too many ways. A bill passed last week by the Assembly would trade one set of problems for another.
