Three hundred years ago this Friday, a monarch who has become revered on these islands with glorious, pious and immortal memory, died from injuries received in most unusual circumstances.
King William III, the Prince of Orange, was out riding at Richmond Park in London on a bright spring day in 1702 when his favourite horse, Sorrel stumbled on a mole hill, causing the hapless William to fall to the ground on his right shoulder, breaking his collar bone.
