Some months seem to have a certain sameness. August, for example, typically enters in sweltering heat and then departs with the weather still sultry.
March, on the other hand, is rich with change. It commences in the grip of winter, the trees bereft of leaves and the ground barren. But before it exits, daffodils have arisen from what had seemed permanently desolate soil. March is a time of great stirring, an awakening; and the authentic dawn of the year. No wonder that the Romans, closer to the rhythms of nature than we, began their year with March.
