Lon Chaney died in 1930 from a fast-growing cancer on his vocal cords, soon after the release of his only talkie.

It was an ironic end to a 10-year career starring in Hollywood silent films that took advantage of his mime skills and his ability to transform himself into surreal characters with a combination of makeup and physical contortions.

The Man of a Thousand Faces will be filling the screen all month at the Silent Movie Theatre, beginning at 8 p.m. Thursday with ``The Penalty,'' in which he plays a deranged mobster out for revenge against the surgeon who amputated his legs when he was a child.
