THE visionaries of artificial intelligence foresee things as fantastic as any writer of science fiction. In his recent book, "Mind Children", Dr Hans Moravec, who is director of the mobile robot laboratory at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, describes a future in which computers will match all the mental abilities and quirks of people. He thinks this will happen in about 2030. After that they will overtake their hapless creators and run the world.
