IT SEEMED a charmed life. Michael Ventris, Cambridge's most glamorous postwar academic, had it all: fame for cracking the Minoan script Linear B; screen-idol looks and a cutting-edge modernist home in Hampstead packed with furniture designed by Bauhaus architect Marcel Breuer. Then, in 1956, he was killed in a car crash aged 34.
