IT SEEMED THAT some people were upset that Steven Spielberg didn't turn into Stanley Kubrick when he made ``A.I. Artificial Intelligence.'' Though Spielberg undoubtedly was showing his admiration for Kubrick when he took up the late director's unfinished project, the product at the end better resembled something from the man behind ``E.T.'' and ``Close Encounters'' than it did from the director of ``2001'' or ``Eyes Wide Shut.''

But it's too easy to simply dismiss ``A.I.,'' which comes out today on an excellently produced two-DVD set, as Kubrick-lite. What's clear from watching the extras on the DVD was that ...
