The initial reviews were not great when women's hockey debuted at the 1998 Winter Olympics: The hockey was sloppy, and nobody knew much about the personalities involved.

The U.S. team became the feel-good story of the Games for Americans. The United States and Canada split 14 games evenly in a series leading up the Olympics. The bitter competition carried over to Nagano, developing into a dramatic battle that captured the attention of the American public. The culmination was a hard-fought U.S. victory over their rivals in the gold medal game.
