Zinc Deficiency and Growth
"Failure-to-thrive" is the name doctors use to describe an infant or child who isn't growing and developing normally. The causes of this syndrome are many, from poor nutrition to inadequate parenting. A group of physicians in Denver have been investigating the role of zinc and, more specifically, zinc deficiency, in poor growth.
Zinc supplementation has been shown to improve the growth patterns of children with a zinc deficiency. Zinc supplementation is also associated with an increase in food consumption.
