The Earl Anthony Memorial Tournament, which was held the first week of January 2002, was a very nice tribute, but it fell a little short in one respect: Earl liked to be referred to as "one of the greatest bowlers ever" rather than "the greatest left-handed bowler ever." He preferred no reference to being left-handed, because he thought it diminished his accomplishments. How often does someone, say Dick Weber and Don Carter were the greatest right-handed bowlers ever? Never.
Earl also may have appreciated seeing fewer lefties in the finals that week (there were three) because he'd think the left side was "softened up" in tribute to him. Earl was often the only ...
