2002 MAR 13 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- It is estimated that 15-57% of older adults experience some form of chronic depression for a period of time later in their lives, according to recent research, and this may compromise their ability to fight off infections and cancers.

Lead researcher, Lynanne McGuire, PhD, of John Hopkins School of Medicine and coauthors Janice K. Kiecolt-Glaser, PhD, and Ronald Glaser, PhD, of Ohio State University College of Medicine found that even chronic, subclinical mild depression may suppress an older person's immune system.
