2002 MAR 11 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Women with phenylketonuria (PKU) who are pregnant who abandon their special diet risk having babies with mental retardation, according to the February 15, 2002 Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The use of newborn screening to prevent mental retardation in children with PKU is a major public health success.
