Mar. 7--TALLAHASSEE, Fla.--Senate President John McKay's bid to wipe out nearly $1 billion worth of tax breaks to boost education spending took a staggering hit Wednesday when McKay's Republican successor announced his opposition to the plan as support among other senators appeared to erode.
Incoming Senate President Jim King of Jacksonville told McKay in a private meeting he couldn't support the plan, telling reporters he was besieged with calls and mail from voters in his district opposed to the proposal. The move prompted McKay to postpone debate on the Senate budget until next week.
