For the second time in less than a year, the University of Wisconsin Athletic Department will be asked to swallow a bitter financial pill courtesy of the state.

Last summer, a $700,000 annual appropriation earmarked for women's sports at UW was abruptly yanked as a belt-tightening measure. The move came after the UW Athletic Department budget had been approved by the Board of Regents, which is a major reason why the UW Athletic Department is facing an estimated $225,000 budget deficit for 2001-2002.
