When the moving van carted novelist Gore Vidal's papers away from the State Historical Society of Wisconsin last week, we got a powerful reminder that one of Wisconsin's greatest assets is suffering from a serious crisis of direction.
I refer to the State Historical Society of Wisconsin by its proper name, not the "Wisconsin Historical Society" moniker recently adopted as a marketing gimmick by the managers who allowed the Vidal papers to be carted off to Harvard's Houghton Library.
