OLYMPIA -- State Senate leaders propose to phase out the estate tax on inherited property - which brings in more than $100 million a year - even as they slash services and try to cancel state worker raises to deal with a $1.6 billion budget hole.
The Senate budget proposal released this week would cut $8.3 million from next year's estate tax collections. That assumes the state would completely phase out the tax by 2010 - the same year the federal estate tax is scheduled to disappear.
