THIS ID A SPLENDID BOOK physically, handsome and solid, stuffed with fine illustrations and graphics. It is worth looking at the pictures alone even if your graduate school training did not include a reading knowledge of German. Most of the book is historical narrative set in long dense paragraphs, but though Vollmar's German is academic it is not particularly elaborate or difficult, and even modest reading knowledge of the language should make most of the book accessible to readers interested in ...
