The Eastern Mojave desert Nelson bighorn sheep population is seriously threatened if the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California and Santa Monica-based Cadiz Inc. follow through on their proposal to pump and store water in a natural desert aquifer, environmentalists say.
``It could be dastardly,'' says Dick Conti of the Society for Conservation of Bighorn Sheep. ``I don't know if water will be able to recharge into natural springs. I'm concerned that we're just going to get run over. Money talks.''
