For more than 28 years, Jeanette Chaney has been a mother, a nurse, a caretaker and a friend.
Her charges, however, are not children. They are tortoises - some five to six breeds, weighing from mere ounces to nearly 100 pounds - that inhabit her back yard in the foothills of south Palmdale.
``My dad was a truck driver, and when I asked for a pet, he would bring me a desert tortoise,'' Chaney said. ``Back then, they were all over the place, and it was legal to pick them up and take them home.''
