Three months behind schedule, a kinder, gentler stretch of Wiley Canyon Road finally will reopen to traffic next month - minus the dangerous hairpin turn that motorists once cursed.

Construction of the 1,600-foot stretch of roadway is finished, but workers continue to put finishing touches on a retaining wall built against the shaved-down hillside, where an S-curve once existed, as well as installing guard rails, street lights, a bicycle path and new sidewalks, said Chris Price, the city's project supervising engineer.
