Mar. 9--In a gambit to retain its key franchise, Schering-Plough Corp. plans to make the best-selling allergy pill, Claritin, available directly to consumers in drug stores later this year.
The Kenilworth-based drug maker said Friday that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration accepted for review its application to switch all versions of Claritin to over-the-counter, rather than prescription, status -- an about face from last May when the company objected to a health insurer's bid to compel Claritin and two other allergy medicines over-the-counter.
