Academic medical centers (AMCs) throughout the country are struggling financially as they grapple with fallout from the Balanced Budget Act of 1997 (BBA), rigid managed care contracts and more than their share of uncompensated care.
But some of them are finding a solution through partnerships with cross-town private hospitals. Georgetown University Medical Center has become the latest academic medical center to turn to such a partnership. It has forged a long-term agreement with MedStar Health, the Baltimore area's huge, not-for-profit integrated system that includes six major hospitals, 19,000 employees and over 3,000 affiliated physicians.
