Indian Air Force (IAF) MiG-21s shot down a Pakistani Atlantique ATL-1 reconnaissance aircraft last month. India maintains that the aircraft violated its airspace and was fired upon after it turned into the path of the intercepting IAF MiG-21s. India also. claims the Pakistani aircraft violated Indian airspace eight times between May and July. Indian officials believe that the reconnaissance aircraft was on a spying mission when it was shot down, citing the ATL-1.'s onboard electronic-intelligence-gathering capabilities and its alleged repeated incursions into Indian airspace.
