A push to create an open-space preservation district in Fremont Township has been a grass-roots effort from the day it was proposed.

It was a group of area residents who - during a town hall meeting in April 2001 - came up with the idea to buy farmland, fields and other open space to stop out-of-control development in the mostly rural township.

And it's primarily been residents who have lobbied for the $10 million project since then, spending many hours working on the plan and then promoting it in the community.
