Microsoft yesterday denied published reports it is recalling its Xbox game console in Japan because of a defect causing the machine to put cosmetic scratches on game discs.
But a company executive acknowledged that some Japanese Xboxes are flawed and will be repaired or replaced for free at a customer's request.
Late Wednesday night, Tokyo-based journalists for Bloomberg News service reported a recall, saying the DVD drives in some Japanese Xbox units scratch the outer perimeter of game discs but don't affect their usability. They said Microsoft blamed the maker of the DVD drives, which it refused to name.
