BEN Mikhail Gorbachev came to power in 1985, I was writing a book in order to extract a bone that had been stuck in my throat since the Vietnam War.
The book, entitled The Key to Failure: Laos and the Vietnam War, was based on the premise, boldly acknowledged today by Hanoi, that the war was primarily one of North Vietnamese conquest launched through Laos and only secondarily one of indigenous insurgency in South Vietnam.
