YOU KNOW A MARKETING technique is making waves when it is mentioned in a popular TV drama. This is the case with cookies. In a recent episode of The Sopranos, one of the New Jersey gang is browsing the Web from a laptop in the Bada Bing bar. Seeing this, Tony Soprano says: "Do you mind? That cookie shit gives me the creeps."
Soprano may well have good reason for being concerned about having his actions (or those of his associates) tracked in any way. But the line is likely to have raised a smile of recognition from viewers. Unlike many data-related techniques, which remain hidden from consumers, the public have caught marketers out on this one.
