ABIX via COMTEX) -- The famous red soil of southern Coonawarra in South Australia makes it the sought-after region for growing cabernet sauvignon grapes. Doug Balnaves established his Balnaves of Coonawarra vineyard, on the terra rossa of southern Coonawarra, in 1975. He sold his grapes to other producers until his label was established in 1990. He then built a winery in 1996 and his Balnaves wines are now recording growth in domestic and export sales. He recently released two new wines, the 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon, retailing at $A31, and the super-premium 1998 "The Tally" Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, retailing at $A80.
