Mar. 13--In the contact sport of bargain wedding gown shopping, few retailers rival Filene's Basement.

Brides and their teams camp out in the bleary hours of the morning. They wear leotards to avoid waiting for dressing rooms and use whistles to signal through the madness. The doors open, everyone storms the place.

"They don't care where you are or who you are," said Alan Schlesinger, a man who carries around the weighty titles of president and chief executive officer. "They will knock you down if you're in front of those racks."
