Coeliac disease is believed to affect 1 in 150 of the population in Northern Ireland with many of them taking years to diagnose and many of them dismissed as suffering from irritable bowel syndrome.
Dr William Dickey, consultant gastroenterologist at Altnagelvin Hospital is diagnosing at least 40 new cases a year and hospitals around the province will have their own figures. Some 6,000 in the UK overall are diagnosed each year.
