Maybe it was an outer body experience or perhaps we had entered the shadowy depths of the Twilight Zone. But you tell me how could it be that a three-day break in Essex could be more relaxing, energising and entertaining than a fortnight on the Gulf coast of Florida?

There is, of course, the children factor to be taken into this quixotic equation for the truncated travel times, the cool weather and the unbidden joy of running amok in an idyllic rural setting, have much appeal for the under-fives.
