Myth #1. ADHD is a new disease developed by pharmaceutical companies in order to sell more medications.
Fact. The condition we now call ADHD was first described by a physician, George Still, in 1902, exactly 100 years ago. Actually, a German physician had written a poem in 1854 called "Fidgety Phil," which described some of the identified characteristics. Therefore, this condition has existed for a long time and is not new to medical science (Barkley, 1997; Stubbe, 2000). Methylphenidate was not developed until the 1950s (Wilens & Spencer, 2000).
