A flyby from Tropical Storm Barry had scared most boaters away from Biloxi, Miss., but there I was, headed into the steep, irregular chop aboard a new Boston Whaler 255 Conquest. The deep-V Accutrack hull deftly split the three- to five-foot waves, and when we did take lump, the boat's raked bow thundered ahead without compromise. Even at speeds upwards of 40 mph, I never felt unsafe in this famously unsinkable craft.
The Teleflex hydraulic steering was true and the throttles responsive as we maneuvered to stay safely on top of the sloppy seas. At a cruise of 33 mph, the Mercury SmartCraft system (which comes standard with any OptiMax motor) told us that our twin ...
