You've no doubt heard the sports expression, ``It's not over till the fat lady sings.''
In halibut derbies, the motto could be, ``It's not over till the fat lady clings . . . to the line.'' The lady in question is the faster- and larger-growing female California halibut that swims into the Santa Monica Bay each spring to spawn - and hopefully get fooled by a sardine-camouflaged hook.
Yep, the fat lady is what's going to win the annual Marina del Rey and Santa Monica Bay halibut derbies - musts for anyone who loves to target the distinctive fish with both eyes on one side of its head.
