With a typical dominating performance, the New York Yankees shoved the '54 Indians out of the record book.
New York set an American League mark with its 112th win Friday night, with Derek Jeter becoming the first Yankees shortstop in nearly a half-century to get 200 hits in a 6-1 home victory over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
The Yankees (112-48) beat Tampa Bay for the ninth time in 10 games and increased their winning percentage to .700. They need wins over the Devil Rays in their final two games to become the first major-league team since the '54 Cleveland Indians (111-43) to play .700-ball over an entire season.
