Roger Clemens, pushing Toronto to improve itself or trade him, won a record fifth American League Cy Young award Monday.
Clemens received all 28 first-place votes in balloting by two members of the Baseball Writers Association of America in each league city. Clemens was also a unanimous selection in 1986. There have been only two other unanimous AL Cy Young picks: Denny McLain in 1968 and Ron Guidry in 1978.
No other AL pitcher has won the award more than three times. Hall of Famer Steve Carlton and Atlanta's Greg Maddux each have four National League Cy Youngs.
