If Randy Newman's subtly outrageous songs were living things, they'd be sneaky little vipers that creep up on unsuspecting listeners and bite their ankles.
His canon includes the deeply sardonic cabaret of ``Lonely at the Top,'' the dark, bawdy rock track ``You Can Leave Your Hat On,'' the widely misunderstood ``Short People,'' and ``God's Song (That's Why I Love Mankind),'' in which God is presented not as vindictive or cruel but intentionally oblivious to mankind's suffering.
