The Ventura Mariners earned the distinction as the first Western States Hockey League team to defeat a Junior A Division team from the higher-level North American Hockey League in December.
Now, the Mariners are aiming for another first: to become the first WSHL team to become certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation by the Red Cross.
The team, along with coach Sean McGillivray, general manager Phil Basile and equipment manager Ted Mikolyski, will be taking a four-hour class next week to learn CPR.
