An ailing baby whale, rescued from Venice Beach on Saturday, appeared to gain strength Sunday at Sea World, but remained in guarded condition.

The 1,670-pound calf, which veterinarians believe to be a female no more than a couple of weeks old and possibly as young as five days, nuzzled and suckled the hands of its caretakers while it swam in a 10-foot-deep tank of salt water, said a spokeswoman at the San Diego marine park.

The baby California gray whale, 13 feet 8 inches long, was holding down six liters of imitation whale milk every three hours. But it was not yet out of danger, officials said.
