The chasm is too wide now. It's too late in life to pretend.
A private relationship, or non-relationship, is only being rekindled through a public event.
So the father and son try to act like this week's meeting will be business as usual. Just another basketball game. No problem.
But many others will know better. They will understand the underlying tension when Arizona freshman Mike Bibby faces his father, USC coach Henry Bibby, tonight at the Sports Arena.
Don't hold your breath waiting for the warm embrace or tearful hug after the game.
