AT SOME point in a skiing holiday, usually when my legs are aching and I am stuck at the top of what appears to be a death-inviting glacier that my boyfriend says is 'really easy', I always think: Why did God ever allow someone to come up with the notion of putting two planks of wood on your feet?

I adore skiing. So why does this grim thought flit through my brain?

The answer is simple: because I usually ski with macho men (and one incredibly advanced female skier who can talk about ski technique even more than the boys do and thus qualifies as an honorary man).

But in future I'm going to insist that I only ski ...
