While Hollywood usually borrows from Broadway, this week marks the 50th anniversary of one major cultural tradition Broadway borrowed from Hollywood: the award show. Fifty years ago this week, on April 6, 1947, Broadway gave out the first Tonys - an award designed not only to honor theater star Antoinette Perry, but to match the clout and glamour of Hollywood's Oscars.
The plan pretty much worked. Though the Tonys may be dropping in public awareness (thanks to the incompetence of CBS, which handles the broadcast as if it were afraid of catching something), they remain high in industry prestige. Film and TV ...
