As a youth in France, Eva Lothar read John Steinbeck's novel ``Cannery Row,'' but she never dreamed the place really existed.

Years later, in the 1960s, while living above Cannery Row in New Monterey, she discovered it was real. Fascinated by the derelict buildings that stood like ghosts in the early-morning fog, Lothar was inspired to make a film.

Now, nearly 30 years later, the film, ``Street of the Sardine,'' is still testimony to the Cannery Row that Steinbeck called ``a poem, a stink, a grating noise, a quality of light, a tone, a habit, a nostalgia, a dream.''

Lothar lives in Paris ...
